Power has been cut off to tens of thousands of homes due to a slow-moving storm, Typhoon Lan, that made landfall early today. It also forced the cancellation of nearly 900 flights and the order to evacuate 2,40,000 people.
Reportedly, the storm is moving towards Japan from the Pacific Ocean, made landfall near Wakayama Prefecture’s southern-most point, about 400 kilometres (250 miles) South-West of Tokyo.
The storm devastated much of central and western Japan with its strong winds and heavy rain. Authorities issued flood and land-slide warnings and of some tornadoes formed. Authorities also claimed thst they established evacuation facilities in secure structures and on high ground for citizens in 11 prefectures who had been advised to take refuge by the Fire and Disaster Management Agency.
