CANTERBURY, Oct. 7, 2022 (TBINN)
The world of motorcycling loses another of its history-making riders. Phil Read has died. He was born on Jan. 1, 1939 and had been ill for some time, reports confirm.
In Phil’s not short career he won the world championship title seven times between 125 (one), 250 (four, all with Yamaha) and 500 (two, in 1973 and 1974, both times riding an MV Agusta). He often rivaled Giacomo Agostini, with whom there was no shortage of friction.
The Yamaha Racing Family is incredibly saddened by the news that Phil Read, Yamaha’s first-ever road racing world champion, passed away in his sleep at home in Canterbury, England, said the Japanese manufacturer in a statement.
