ISLAMABAD & LAHORE, Mar. 9, 2024 (TBINN)
Asif Ali Zardari was overwhelmingly elected as 14th President of Pakistan today, becoming the only civilian president of the coup-prone country for a second time.
Asif Ali Zardari, the co-chairperson of Pakistan Peoples Party, was the joint candidate of the ruling alliance of P.P.P. and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (P.M.L.-N).
Asif’s rival, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, is the head of his Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkM.A.P.). He was fielded by jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (P.T.I.) Party and backed by Sunni Ittehad Council.
