Witnesses allege death-toll is far more than what declared as many bodies lie unidentified
HATHRAS (Uttar Pradesh), July 3, 2024 (TBINN)
Death-toll in the stampede at a religious congregation in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras has risen to 122, a senior official said today.
According to the Office of Relief Commissioner, the number of people injured in Tuesday’s incident stands at 28.
Of the total fatalities, 19 are yet to be identified, it said.
Uttar Pradesh Police today registered F.I.R. against organisers of the religious congregation.
On Tuesday Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh put the death-toll at 116.
Barring seven children and a man, all the casualties were women. Victims were part of the crowd of not only thousands, but alleged to be above two lakh, that had gathered near Phulrai Village in Sikandrarau Area for the ‘satsang’ by religious preacher Bhole Baba.
The stampede took place at around 3.30 P.M. when Baba was leaving the venue. Witnesses allege that number of dead are far more than declared. It is pertinent to point out here that what was administration and other responsible officials and authorities doing when such a massive gathering collected without permission and arrangements!
Uttar Pradesh Government needs to understand that there is lot more to be attended and done beyond just engaging in bulldozer actions. Valuable human lives can never be compensated, no matter, whatever is done now.
This sad incident should be a wake-up call for authorities and government of Uttar Pradesh!
