JAMMU & SRINAGAR, Jul. 19, 2023 (TBINN)
Security forces gunned down four foreign terrorists in a fierce shootout in J & K’s Poonch District while four men linked to Pakistan-backed terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) were taken into custody in the Beerwah Area of Budgam District in central Kashmir.
The operations follow the thwarting of a major infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Krishna Ghati Sector of Poonch during which two terrorists were eliminated.
The counter-terrorism efforts are part of Operation Trinetra, initiated by the Army as a response to the terrorist ambush on a military vehicle in the Mendhar Area of Poonch on April 20, 2023 which resulted in the deaths of five soldiers.
Brigadier M.P. Singh, Commander of 6 Sector, Rashtriya Rifles (R.R.), stated that the presence of heavily-armed terrorists in forests near Sindarah Village of Poonch indicates a deliberate attempt to destabilise the region. He emphasised that timely killing of the men hiding in the area was crucial in averting potential major terrorist attacks.
Identity of the slain terrorists is yet to be ascertained. Four A.K.-series rifles with eight magazines and 196 cartridges, along with two 9 M.M. pistols bearing Pakistani markings, were found at the site of shooting.
The A.K. rifles were found to have Chinese markings, according to Brig. M.P. Singh.
